Upwork vs Fiverr fees in 2026: what clients and freelancers actually pay
A sourced breakdown of Upwork and Fiverr fees for clients and freelancers in 2026 — service fees, marketplace fees, contract initiation fees and small-order fees — with worked examples.
Platform fees are one of the most misunderstood parts of freelancing. Clients often don't realise they pay a fee on top of the freelancer's price, and freelancers often quote a rate without accounting for what the platform keeps. This guide sets out the published fees of the two largest general freelance marketplaces, Upwork and Fiverr, as of October 2026, with links to each company's own help pages so you can check for changes.
We run Freelancers India, so we have an interest in this topic. We have tried to stick to what each platform publishes, and at the end we explain plainly how Freelancers India differs — including what we do not offer yet.
Upwork fees
Upwork charges both sides of a contract.
What freelancers pay on Upwork
According to Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee help article and its freelancer pricing page:
- Freelancers pay a variable service fee of 0% to 15% on earnings, including bonuses.
- The exact percentage is shown when a client sends an offer or when the freelancer submits a proposal, and it is locked once the contract begins. Different contracts can carry different fees.
- Direct Contracts (bringing your own client to Upwork) carry a reduced 5% fee, or 0% for active Freelancer Plus members, per Upwork's Direct Contracts article.
- Some arrangements, such as Enterprise relationships and Any Hire contracts, have different terms.
Freelancers also spend Connects to submit proposals; Connects are a separate, paid currency and their cost can vary, so check Upwork's current Connects pricing.
What clients pay on Upwork
According to Upwork's client pricing page:
- Basic plan: a 5% marketplace fee on payments to freelancers (3% for eligible US clients paying by checking account).
- Business Plus plan: a 10% fee (8% for eligible US clients paying by checking account).
- A one-time Contract Initiation Fee of $0.99–$14.99 on each new Marketplace or Project Catalog contract, per Upwork's Contract Initiation Fee article. The amount varies by contract type, account history and hiring activity.
Upwork worked example
A client on the Basic plan hires a freelancer for a $1,000 fixed-price project, and the freelancer's contract carries a 10% service fee:
| Amount | |
|---|---|
| Project price | $1,000 |
| Client marketplace fee (5%) | +$50 |
| Contract initiation fee (varies, up to $14.99) | +$0.99 to $14.99 |
| Client pays | about $1,051–$1,065 |
| Freelancer service fee (10% in this example) | −$100 |
| Freelancer receives (before withdrawal and currency costs) | $900 |
Fiverr fees
Fiverr is built around "gigs" — packaged services with a fixed price — although custom offers and milestones are also available.
What freelancers (sellers) pay on Fiverr
Fiverr's "How Fiverr works for freelancers" article states that freelancers receive 80% of the client's cleared payment — in other words a 20% commission, which applies to the order, gig extras and tips. Earnings are subject to a clearing period (14 days for most sellers, shorter for some higher seller levels) before they can be withdrawn.
What clients (buyers) pay on Fiverr
Fiverr's payments help article states that the standard client service fee is 5.5% of the purchase amount, plus $3.50 on orders under $200, and that each separate payment (such as an extra or a tip) carries its own fee. Note that one older Fiverr help page still mentions $3.00 for orders under $100 — the payments article above is the more specific, and the checkout always shows the final fee before you pay. Taxes such as GST or VAT may be added depending on the client's country; for example, Fiverr's tax article says clients in India are charged 18% GST unless they provide a valid GSTIN.
Fiverr worked example
A client buys a $150 gig:
| Amount | |
|---|---|
| Gig price | $150 |
| Client service fee (5.5%) | +$8.25 |
| Small-order fee (order under $200) | +$3.50 |
| Client pays (before any tax) | $161.75 |
| Fiverr commission (20%) | −$30 |
| Freelancer receives (before withdrawal and currency costs) | $120 |
Side-by-side summary
| Upwork | Fiverr | |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer fee | 0–15% variable, set per contract | 20% |
| Client fee | 5% (Basic) or 10% (Business Plus); lower for some US checking-account payers | 5.5% + $3.50 on orders under $200 |

Which model suits which kind of work?
Fees aside, the two platforms suit different work:
- Packaged, repeatable services — a logo, a set of social media templates, a WordPress speed fix — fit Fiverr's gig model well. The scope is defined by the seller, so the buyer can order quickly.
- Custom, multi-week projects — a Shopify migration, a data pipeline, an SEO programme — usually fit a job-and-proposal model better, because the scope needs to be shaped around the client's situation. That is the model Upwork and Freelancers India use.
- Ongoing relationships benefit most from low fees on repeat work, which is why Upwork reduces fees for Direct Contracts and why many freelancers eventually move long-term clients to direct invoicing once trust is established.
The costs that aren't on the fee page
Platform fees are only part of the picture. For Indian freelancers paid in foreign currency, and for clients paying across borders, also consider:
- Withdrawal fees charged by the platform or payment method.
- Currency conversion spreads — the difference between the rate you get and the mid-market rate. These can be larger than the headline fee.
- Bank charges on inward remittances.
- Taxes — GST on platform fees for Indian users, and income tax on earnings. Indian freelancers exporting services should read our guide on GST and the LUT for export of services.
How freelancers should price with fees in mind
If a platform takes a percentage, build it into your quote rather than absorbing it. A simple formula: quote = target take-home ÷ (1 − fee rate). To take home $900 on a contract with a 10% fee, quote $1,000. With a 20% commission, quote $1,125. Our pricing guide for Indian freelancers explains how to work out the take-home figure in the first place.
How Freelancers India is different (honestly)
Freelancers India is a younger, smaller, specialist marketplace focused on Indian freelancers working with clients in India and abroad. As of October 2026:
- Posting a job, creating a profile and sending proposals are free. There are no proposal credits.
- We do not process payments yet. Clients and freelancers agree a payment method directly for each milestone. That means there is no platform fee on payments — but it also means the platform does not offer payment protection, hold funds or resolve payment disputes. Any future payment holding will only be offered through a licensed provider.
- Contracts on the platform have written milestones, submissions, revision requests and approvals, so both sides have a shared record.
- Jobs can be budgeted in INR or USD, so domestic Indian clients can hire too.
If and when we introduce fees, they will be published on our pricing page before they apply. The bigger platforms offer things we don't yet — payment protection, a huge client base, dispute handling — and that is a fair trade-off to weigh.
