How to price your services as an Indian freelancer working with international clients

A practical pricing guide for Indian freelancers: moving beyond the cheapest bid, calculating a floor rate, packaging work, and raising prices.

Competing on price alone is a race nobody wins. International clients hire Indian freelancers for quality and reliability as much as cost. Here's a practical way to set prices you can sustain.

Calculate your floor rate

Your floor is the minimum hourly rate below which a project loses you money.

  1. Add up your monthly costs: living expenses, software, internet, hardware replacement, health insurance, and savings.
  2. Add taxes you expect to pay (speak to a Chartered Accountant for your situation).
  3. Estimate realistic billable hours. Most freelancers bill 60–70% of their working time; the rest goes to sales, admin and learning.
  4. Divide total monthly need by billable hours, then convert to USD.

That number is your floor, not your price.

Price on value, not on time

Ask what the outcome is worth to the client. A Shopify speed fix that lifts conversions, or an automation that saves a team ten hours a week, has a measurable value. Pricing a fixed fee as a fraction of that value is fairer to both sides than counting hours.

Package your work

Turn your most common job into a named package with a clear scope, timeline and price — for example, "Technical SEO audit + prioritised fix list, 7 days". Packages make buying easier and protect you from scope creep.

Offer three options

When you propose, consider offering a basic, recommended and premium option. Clients often pick the middle option, and the premium option anchors the value.

Handle "your price is too high"

  • Re-state the outcome and how you'll measure it.
  • Reduce scope, not your rate: offer a smaller first milestone.
  • Walk away politely if the budget can't cover your floor.

Raise prices deliberately

Review your rates every six months. Raise them for new clients first, and give existing clients notice. A full calendar is a sign you are underpriced.

Make the payment terms clear

State currency (usually USD), milestone amounts, payment method and due dates in your proposal. Freelancers India tracks milestones but doesn't process payments yet, so agree these terms in writing.
