How to hire a Shopify developer in India: scope, skills, costs and red flags

A guide for D2C brands in India and abroad hiring a Shopify developer or expert — what to ask for, how to scope theme and app work, Core Web Vitals targets, access, budgets in INR or USD and red flags.

India has a deep pool of Shopify developers, partly because the country's own direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands have grown up on the platform and partly because Indian agencies have served international merchants for years. That makes it a good place to hire — whether you run a D2C brand in Delhi or a store in Melbourne. It also means the range of quality is wide. This guide helps you scope the work, ask the right questions and avoid common mistakes.

First, decide what kind of Shopify work you need

"Shopify developer" covers very different jobs. Be specific, because the right person — and the right price — differ:

Type of workTypical deliverablesSkills to look for
Store setupTheme configured, products imported, payments, shipping and taxes set upShopify admin, data import, Indian/international payment and shipping settings
Theme customisationNew sections, page templates, design changesLiquid, Online Store 2.0 sections and blocks, CSS, JavaScript
Custom theme buildA theme built from a designLiquid, theme architecture, performance, accessibility
Performance workFaster pages, better Core Web VitalsLighthouse, PageSpeed Insights, image and script optimisation, app audit
Apps and integrationsPrivate/custom apps, ERP, CRM or WhatsApp integrationsShopify Admin API, webhooks, Node or Ruby, security
MigrationMoving from WooCommerce, Magento or another platformData mapping, URL redirects, SEO preservation

If you need two or three of these, consider splitting them into milestones — for example, a performance audit first, then theme fixes, then an integration.

Write a Shopify-specific brief

A good brief for Shopify work includes:

  • Store URL (or a staging/development store) and your current theme name and version.
  • Your plan (Basic, Shopify, Advanced or Plus) — some features, such as checkout customisation, depend on it.
  • Apps installed — they are a frequent cause of slow pages and conflicts.
  • Markets — do you sell only in India, or internationally with multiple currencies and languages?
  • What success looks like — "mobile product pages load with LCP under 2.5 seconds", "abandoned-cart WhatsApp messages sent within 30 minutes", "all old WooCommerce URLs redirect correctly".
  • Budget range in INR or USD and a timeline.

Our general guide on writing a freelance job brief has a reusable template.

Set measurable performance targets

Store speed affects both conversions and search visibility. Google's Core Web Vitals guidance on web.dev defines "good" thresholds at the 75th percentile of page loads: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) of 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) of 0.1 or less. Ask candidates how they would measure these for your store — field data from PageSpeed Insights or the Search Console Core Web Vitals report — rather than promising a perfect lab score.

Questions to ask candidates

  1. "Walk me through a Shopify store you improved. What was the problem and what changed?"
  2. "How do you work on a theme without breaking the live store?" (Good answer: duplicate the theme or use a development store, use version control with the Shopify CLI, preview before publishing.)
  3. "Which apps would you remove or replace on our store, and why?"
  4. "How would you handle our URL redirects if we change collection or product handles?"
  5. "What access do you need, and what level of staff permissions?"

Access: use collaborator or staff accounts

Never share your owner login. Shopify lets you give partners and freelancers access through collaborator accounts or staff accounts with specific permissions; see Shopify's help centre on collaborator accounts. Grant only the permissions needed, and remove access when the project ends. If the developer builds a custom app, make sure it is created under your store and that you hold the API credentials.

Budgeting in INR or USD

We won't quote average rates we can't back with data, and Shopify work varies too much for a single number to be useful. Instead:

  • Ask for a fixed price per milestone for well-defined work (a section, a template, an audit).
  • Use a capped hourly or day rate for open-ended work like bug fixing.
  • Compare two or three quotes against the same brief.
  • If you're in India, decide whether your budget is GST-inclusive; see TDS and GST when hiring freelancers.

On Freelancers India, Indian clients can post Shopify jobs with INR budgets, and international clients with USD budgets. Posting is free.

Extra considerations for Indian D2C brands

If you sell mainly to customers in India, include these in your brief, because they change the work:

  • Payment gateways. Indian stores typically use third-party gateways that support UPI, cards, net banking and wallets. Check which gateways are available for your store in Shopify admin, and ask the developer whether they have integrated the one you use.
  • Cash on delivery. COD is still common in Indian e-commerce. Rules for COD availability by pincode or order value, and COD confirmation flows over WhatsApp or SMS, are frequent requests.
  • GST invoices. If you are GST-registered, your customer invoices need the right tax details. Many stores use an invoicing app; make sure it fits your accountant's requirements.
  • Shipping and pincodes. Integration with your logistics provider, serviceability checks and delivery estimates.
  • Mobile-first performance. A large share of Indian shoppers browse on mid-range Android phones over mobile data, so test on real mid-range devices, not just a fast laptop.

Extra considerations for international stores

  • Multiple markets, currencies and languages, including correct prices and translated content.
  • Duties and taxes messaging at checkout.
  • Time zone overlap for launch days — agree who is on call when the store goes live. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year.

A sample milestone plan for a performance project

  1. Audit (week 1): baseline field and lab metrics for the five highest-traffic templates, app audit, prioritised fix list.
  2. Fixes on a duplicate theme (weeks 2–3): image sizing and lazy-loading, script deferral, app removals agreed with you, font optimisation.
  3. Release and verification (week 4): publish, monitor field data, document every change.

Each milestone has its own deliverable and acceptance criteria, so you can stop after the audit if you prefer to fix things in-house.

How to compare two proposals

When two proposals land at very different prices, line them up against the same questions: Does each one list concrete deliverables? Does it say how the work will be tested before going live? Does it mention redirects, backups and handover? Does the timeline include your review time? The cheaper proposal is often cheaper because it leaves these out — which you then pay for later.

Red flags

  • Asking for your owner password instead of collaborator access.
  • Editing the live theme directly with no backup or duplicate.
  • Promising a guaranteed "100" PageSpeed score — lab scores are useful but not the goal; real-user metrics matter more.
  • Installing more apps to fix problems caused by apps.
  • No mention of redirects in a migration proposal — that can cost you search traffic.
  • Pressure to pay the full amount up front for a multi-week project.

After launch: handover checklist

  • All code in your theme (and, ideally, a Git repository you own).
  • A short document listing changes, new sections and how to edit them.
  • Any custom app credentials held by you.
  • Collaborator or staff access removed or reduced.
  • Before/after metrics recorded.
